New software could help address trucker fatigue

Missouri residents should know how commercial truck drivers are at a high risk for drowsy driving. The average trucker is on the road for as much as 70 hours over the course of an eight-day workweek, so this is to be expected. Nevertheless, it can be a shock to hear that an estimated 100,000 or more truck crashes occur each year because of drowsy driving.

Combating fatigue behind the wheel is one of the goals of an Oklahoma-based startup called BlyncSync. Founded three years ago, the company focuses on developing safety software that can encourage truckers to become better drivers. It is currently working on a pair of safety glasses that measure blink rate: a proven indicator of fatigue. Other products that are in the works include smart hard hats and watches that measure heart rate and other biometric data.

BlyncSync is still in the process of creating a scalable business plan, but it has the help of i2E, a nationally recognized nonprofit that builds up small businesses. Five trucking companies, some outside the state, will participate in the startup's first pilot program. In the future, BlyncSync may have a positive impact on not only accident rates but also insurance rates, trucker turnover rates, and relations between truckers and dispatchers.

Since truckers are responsible for maintaining control of their vehicles, they are normally to blame for any accidents that they cause. Accident victims who are not at fault can have a lawyer assess their case. The lawyer could then hire investigators to find proof of truck driver negligence, such as the work log and any in-cab cameras.
